Earlier this year, the Government introduced the Domestic Violence – Victims’ Protection Act. This law introduced paid leave for employees affected by family violence so that they can deal with its effects. Full details of the Act, and what it means for business owners and their teams can be found here.
Research suggests that up to 39 per cent of New Zealand women experience domestic violence in their lifetime and, even if this occurred years ago, it is significantly associated with present physical and mental health problems including depression, sleep problems and suicide attempts. Further, women in violent relationships often have trouble holding down jobs or accessing enough money to feed their children or provide them with other necessities. These difficulties often compound when she leaves the relationship.
The economic cost of domestic violence on the individual, family, community and country as a whole is considerable. In 2014, The Glenn Inquiry economic impact study conservatively estimated the economic cost to be upwards of $7 billion annually. However, as the Human Rights Commission’s Dr Jackie Blue said at the time, “The human cost is immeasurable.”
AB Hair and Makeup is one local business trying to support women (and their children) affected by domestic violence. From now until Friday, 20th December the salon is collecting wrapped Christmas gifts which will then be taken to Women’s Refuge in Orewa (the closest location to the East Coast Bays). “It’s awful to think about what these women and children have endured – and perhaps are still mentally enduring,” says salon owner Rebecca Cook. “One of the team here suggested the gift drive, and we’ve been absolutely blown away by our clients’ generosity.” AB Hair is also offering some free hair services for any women and children currently resident at the Orewa centre. “Getting a haircut obviously can’t change the world, but perhaps it could give a little boost in self-confidence. That’s why we’re offering a safe space where you can enjoy some quiet ‘me’ time.”
You can donate a Christmas present at AB Hair and Makeup, Shop 9, Clyde Court, Browns Bay.
